Good people of the Internet, Welcome to July! How we holding up? From my inside world:My slow-work June did not feel all that slow (I did premiere 30 minutes of a one-woman show on the 20th), so I've decided to extend it a couple of days. I'm heading to Edisto to claim some moments of beach time and creek time, and to watch the oysters spit at low tide. Self-employed life means there is no promise of security whatsoever, but it is a price I will gladly continue to pay for the chance to prioritize oysters spitting when I know that's exactly what I need. If you are young and/or at the beginning of your own SE journey, try not to be discouraged by all the people who urge you to reconsider "for the sake of your future". It is essentially an act of love, however misguided. They'll pipe down after a while. By the time they do, you won't care anymore. You're too busy making cool shit and watching oysters spit when you need to. Upcoming cool shit:On Sunday July 6th, the Charleston Artists Salon will meet for the first time in our new home: ARC Take 2 Studios! All my gratitude goes to Sarah Dionna for creating this space and for her generous and tireless efforts to create her own work and empower others to create theirs. You can click on the graphic below to add it to your calendar if you're local. Better yet, click the link below to be added to my small-yet-mighty local list, and hear of such things first:
From the podlycast:Episodes during slow-work June are a bit shorter listens, 15-20 minutes and perfect for a drive to the grocery store!
From the Patreon:Fully 30 minutes of my WIP one-woman show finally burst onto the stage on June 20th, bellowing out the song of its people to a standing ovation in The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories. This exists thanks to the tireless efforts of choreographer Georgia Schrubbe and a magnificent corps of dancers. A quote from the entry: It's hard to see hours spent stuffing a hot pink skirt with fake butt pillows as a worthy endeavor when compared to the threat of war, an active genocide, and any other number of horrors that greet us on a daily basis.
Then again, sometimes the horrors remind us of why it is imperative that we do so in the first place.
I've written about what it was like for me here, as well as some excellent BTS footage of Manflesh standing in for me during tech (that alone is worth the click): I had been pretty hush-hush about the middle section of my piece, but in early June after a filmed dress rehearsal, I released this to patrons. I crowdsourced a good deal of the raw material for the voiceover from FB and IG, as I'm well aware the experiences I'm referring to are not at all unique to me. The footage from the show isn't back yet, but this is a pretty chunky l'amuse bouche if I don't say so myself: And now without further flotsam, I present to you- July's Woo Corner:Notice anything about this feminine archetype? Something around her midsection, maybe? That's right, she's pregnant. Up the duff, as my Aussie babes taught me to say. And yes, this can absolutely be literal- and if it is for you and you are pleased, then allow me to offer you my warm congratulations! If it is not literal for you- which is probably most of you- read on. The Princess of Disks' fecundity is not limited to her capacity to create human life, but rather life itself. She is not just possibility, she is impending possibility- the next act is already waiting in the wings like any good artist. The new life she carries is not theoretical- it is coming. It's not a twinkle in her eye, it's already gestating. The Princess of Disk is a stable card. Unwavering in her aims, she wants what she wants when she wants it. Usually, she gets it. That's the magic of tunnel vision, or rather, attention. While she can be stubborn AF, her true nature is a generous, sensual, and loving archetype. She wanders her queendom in benevolence, connected to her higher truth (that's the influence of those horns you see) and able to bestow that truth to the material realm for the benefit of all lucky enough to be in her queendom. Woo Corner is no stranger to new beginnings, they are always around the corner. If you've been waiting to see evidence of your new beginning, don't be discouraged if the shoot hasn't broken through the soil yet. It will. Keep watering it- the roots are already growing. Card #2: RowanThe second draw for July is from the Tree Angel Oracle Deck- I do not remember the loving soul who gifted me this deck, which is very on brand and I apologize to whoever you are. Thank you for the gift, sorry I don't remember. I'm sheepish about this, but it will happen again. Anyway, Rowan's influence is alllll about internal inspiration. Massively creative, but driven from an interior place. If you've been frustrated by feeling that your ideas were cliche or somehow just parroting back things other people have said or made, this card's influence should be a relief. We're allowed to be inspired by whatever tf inspires us, but this influence in particular is very self-motivated. These two cards being pulled together absolutely screams "TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE". Not one but two cards that unapologetically insist that they know best. That wants what they want when they want it, and that has no reservations about their inner compass being the right way to go. Culture would have us believe this flavor of person to be undesireably confident. But in my opinion this is the kind of person I want to hang out with. People pleasing is so five minutes ago. Can we please enter the era of owning our desires, stating our truths, and not needing permission to want what we want? Doesn't that sound like so much more fun than a room full of overly polite creatures socialized to be convenient? Sounds like a good time to me. One last thought here- I've been thinking a lot about "havingness" and how most folks don't even have what they have. We say we want more, but our capacity to have more hasn't been stretched enough to receive it. We don't even have most of the things we have. If we did, we would recognize enough when we saw it. Imma say that one more time...if we had the capacity to have that matched our drive to have, then we would recognize enough when we saw it. So...what's enough? And are you able to receive it when it's right in front of you? So here's to being unapologetically, stubbornly, tunnel visioned and to want what we want. Happy gestating. :) Don't go back to sleep. xoRachel |
